A seminar on working life in digital media industries looking at: software tools, worker organisation, company restructuring and creative initiatives and trouble-making.
How do we work now with digital media? Have we shifted from a work culture based on the ambience of clubs to one locked inside cubicles? Has media design become rationalised to the point of complete predictability or is there still room for creativity and fundamental innovation?
With thousands of graduates being skilled-up in digital media across the Netherlands and Europe every year and with the internet becoming massified and maybe even normal, it is time to look at the daily reality of digital work.
Digital work includes the complete cycle: the non-glamorous work of call-centres and warehousing that provides its back-end, the more deadly globalised work of the manufacture and dumping of computers, as well as the 'non-work' of leisure and consumption. How do the 'hacker ethics' of free, networked, deregulated co-operation mesh with other forms of worker organisation? What are the new models emerging amongst the mix of roles, skills, ideas, talents, activities and technologies? How does digital work effect and provide new perspectives on media design: how is design itself shaped and driven by the sites and software which it makes?
Speakers:
Maurizio Lazzarato is a Paris-based sociologist, a member of the editorial group of the journal Multitudes and the author of the influential essay, Immaterial labour. He is the author of: Puissances de l’invention. La psychologie économique de Gabriel Tarde contre l’économie politique and of Videofilosofia, percezione e lavoro nel post-fordisme. Lazzarato last worked with Knowbotic Research in relation with V2_ on the project 10dencies, lavoro immateriale.
Steve Baldwin is a New York based co-founder of NetSlaves the site that has for the last five years charted work on the internet from the beginnings of the ‘Great Tech Gold Rush’ to its present day. Allworth Press have just published NetSlaves 2.0, which Baldwin co-authored with Bill Lessard. Baldwin has been an editor at PC Magazine, Computer Shopper and Time Warner’s Pathfinder. Recently, he developed Ghost Sites of the Web, an e-zine devoted to failed websites.
Laurence Rassel is a Cyberfeminist and member of Constant, an artist-run organisation in Brussels. Constant has organised numerous digital culture events such as Copy.cult and Jonctions-Verbindingen. Along with Interface3, a centre for womens’ vocational training and digital working life, and in the framework of the ADA network for women and technology, Laurence Rassel is an organiser of Digitales, a yearly working conference bringing together women from various backgrounds dealing with new technologies.
Following the presentations, there will be a roundtable discussion providing responses from experts and designers from the Netherlands. The roundtable will be moderated by Brian Holmes.
Hoe werken we op dit moment met digitale media? Was onze werkcultuur gebaseerd op de losse sfeer van een club en denken we nu weer in hokjes? Is ‘media design’ ondertussen zo doelmatig geworden dat de resultaten volslagen voorspelbaar zijn of is er nog ruimte voor creativiteit en werkelijk nieuwe ontwikkelingen?
Nu internet massaal beschikbaar is, en daarmee misschien wel normaal geworden is, nu er in Europa per jaar duizenden studenten worden klaargestoomd voor een carrière in nieuwe media is het tijd om te kijken naar de dagelijkse praktijk van digitaal werk.
Digitaal werk omvat meer dan de snelle wereld van e-commerce en flitsende websites. Het ondankbare werk dat wordt verricht in callcenters, de bundeling van elektronische diensten (‘warehousing’), levensgevaarlijke vormen van werk zoals de productie en afvalverwerking van computeronderdelen in lage lonen landen, maar ook vrijetijdsbesteding en consumptie zijn onderdeel van de levenscyclus van digitaal werk.
Hoe verhoudt de hacker-moraal van vrije, genetwerkte, niet-gereguleerde samenwerking zich tot andere vormen van werkstructurering en werknemersorganisatie? Ontstaan er nieuwe modellen uit de mix van rollen, vaardigheden, ideeën, talenten, activiteiten en technologieën die digitaal werk genereert? Vormt financiering en ‘venture capital’ een goede basis voor een levendige digitale cultuur, zeker nu de ‘nieuwe economie’ is ingestort? Welk effect heeft de manier waarop we met digitale media werken op hoe we die media vormgeven oftewel: op welke manier wordt ontwerpen zélf gevormd en bepaald door de websites en de software die het voortbrengt?

Hij lanceerde recentelijk Ghost Sites of the Web, een e-zine over geflopte websites.
Laurence Rassel is cyberfeministe en lid van Constant, een kunstenaarsinitiatief uit Brussel. Constant organiseerde verschillende evenementen rond digitale cultuur zoals Copy.cult en Jonctions-Verbindingen. Samen met Interface3, een opleidingscentrum voor vrouwen, en in het kader van het ADA netwerk voor vrouwen en technologie, organiseert Rassel Digitales, een jaarlijks terugkerende werkconferentie waarin vrouwen met diverse achtergronden samenkomen rond nieuwe technologie.
Na afloop van de presentaties vindt een rondetafelgesprek plaats waarin ontwerpers en experts over hun ervaringen met digitaal werk zullen discussiëren. Brian Holmes zal het gesprek leiden.
