Job in Finnish social centre Squat And Get Paid! Volunteers wanted for the social centre Siperia in Helsinki, Finland Social centre Siperia in the capital of Finland is looking for a volunteer to come and work with the centre & various projects from Aug/Sep 2004 for up to 12 months. The volunteer will receive accommodation, food, insurance, visa (if needed), support + an allowance of 190 EUR/month and get her/his travel costs paid. This is possible by boldly taking advantage of the EU funded EVS(European Voluntary Service) program whick allows european youth to be involved in intercultural projects for the common good and get paid for it by the EU. What is to be done The social centre is run co-operatively and non-hierarchically, so the volunteers will have a large input into creating their own programme, with the help and support of other volunteers. Ongoing and planned projects include organising gigs and parties, movie evenings and other happenings, opening more social centres, No Border, prisoners support (Gothenburg, Thessaloniki etc), legal & first aid, Night of the Homeless, setting up an Internet radio station and a Nordic magazine in co-operation with groups from Sweden, Norway and Denmark, web site design and development, publishing a monthly alternative events guide in the Helsinki region in English, organising information and skill-sharing workshops such as self-defence workshops... In addition, the volunteer has a possibility to organise his/her own project to bring creativity, ideas and experiences to the community. ...And where the hell is that??? Helsinki is situated by the Baltic Sea in the south coast of Finland opposite Tallinn in Estonia and approx. 500 km from St Petersburg in Russia. The population of the Helsinki region is 1.1 million. Finnish is the dominant language but most people speak good English. The city boasts islands, bays and broad green areas. There are four distinct seasons, with exquisite summers. On hot days the mercury can reach 30'C and even higher. The average temperature in the winter months is between - 3 and - 5'C, and the weather varies from a few degrees above zero to biting frost. In summer there?s plenty of light: in the middle of the night the sky gets only slightly dark but in the heart of winter, there are only about six hours of daylight from sunrise to sunset. Requirements The volunteer must be 18-25 years old when starting the project (due to the funding regulations). The project involves commitment, initiative and working collectively in a team. As the organisation works non-hierarchically, the volunteer must be able to show initiative and take responsibility for his/her tasks with the support from others involved in the project. It's hoped that the volunteer will -be initiative and innovative -have previous experience in squatting and/or political activism -be able to work in non-hierarchic environment -be able to communicate in English (training in Finnish is available if wanted) -stay in Helsinki for 12 months though a shorter period of 6 or 9 months is negotiable How to apply Send us a short description of yourself, things you have been doing and things you are interested in, including contact details and send it to ere@q-olio.net. Deadline for applications is 29th February 2004 but don't worry if you miss that because we are looking for another full-time volunteer to start in Dec/Jan. If you don't meet the age criteria or want to come and volunteer for a shorter period of time (and at your own cost), get in touch with us as accommodation may be available.
