250th Sunday uranium-protest walk in Gronau ! SOFA Muenster - 06.05.2007 23:47
Yesterday afternoon the uranium-resistance on both sides of the Dutch-German border celebrated a special birthday: In Gronau the 250th "Sunday-walk" since 1986 (!) took place in front of the uranium enrichment plant. Speakers from the Netherlands, Gorleben, Ahaus and several other places congratulated to the long enduring resistance and repeated their call for an immediate shut down of the uranium enrichment plants in Gronau and Almelo. Since 1986 the "Sunday walk" has been the backbone of the uranium-resistance in Gronau. The protests have been really big but ensured that the multinational uranium enricher Urenco has never been without resistance. And the next opportunity to demonstrate this will be on Wednesday, 9 May. Well placed sources expect the next uranium waste transport from Gronau to Russia to leave between 6 and 7 pm. The special nuclear train would cross the border at Bad Bentheim/Oldenzaal by about 11-12 pm and cross the Netherlands during night (Oldenzaal-Hengelo-Almelo-Deventer-Apeldoorn-Amersfoort-Utrecht-Rotterdam). In Rotterdam the nuclear waste will be loaded on a ship by the Koninklijke Wagenborg Shipping Company (www.wagenborg.com) and sail to St. Petersburg. Protests are expected along the railway line both in Germany and the Netherlands. More news will be available on our website shortly. The more protests their the more likely it will be that the export of radioactive waste to Russia will be stopped (see report on Indymedia from 28 April). Anti-nuclear activists have today detected the uranium ship, MV Doggersbank, in Rotterdam-Waalhaven. The ship is owned by the Dutch shipping company Wagenborg (www.wagenborg.com) and has repeatedly carried German and Dutch uranium waste from Rotterdam to St. Petersburg. Pictures of the ship are on our and the company website. Well placed sources expect the next uranium transport to leave Gronau and Almelo on Wednesday (9 May) late afternoon. From Gronau the depleted uranium will be transported in form of uranium hexafluoride (UF6) by train, from Almelo by truck to Rotterdam. Anti-nuclear groups from the Netherlands, Germany and Russia have called for a number of protests along the railway line, including the station Hengelo-Oost on Wednesday late evening. The aim is to stopp the export of uranium waste completely. We believe it is irresponsible to dump more than 80 000 t of radioactive waste in Russia, simply because it is cheaper there. By the way: Urenco is planning a uranium conference in Almelo from 13-16 May in the Theaterhotel. Guests are always welcome !! | |
