Uranium waste transport - second try! SOFA Muenster - 15.01.2008 22:59
According to new information Urenco will try tonight (Wednesday) to send the radioactive uranium waste from Gronau and Almelo to Rotterdam and on to Russia. A first try didn't work out last week - according to police the transport was cancelled on short notice. But now 1000 t of depleted uranium from Gronau and the same amount of uranium waste from Almelo are ready for transport. The uranium waste is being stored indefinitely in Russia under open sky. Since 2004 there have been regular protests against this dirty uranium waste export business. Groups in Russia, the Netherlands and Germany call for an immediate end of these transports. The uranium waste is transported from Almelo by lorry and from Gronau by train to Rotterdam. We expect the MV Schouwenbank of the Wagenborg Shipping Company to take the radioactive freight to St Petersburg. The Gronau-train will leave around 7 pm, go to Muenster first and reach the Netherlands in Oldenzaal around 11 pm to midnight. The radioactive train passes Hengelo-Almelo-Deventer-Apeldoorn-Amersfoort-Utrecht and then Rotterdam. From there it goes by ship around Denmark and through the Baltic Sea to Russia. In Hengelo local groups have already called for protests tonight. In several German towns and in Russia more protests are to be expected.
