New uranium waste transport to Russia

Anti-nuclear groups from the Muensterland have issued a warning that in just over 20 hours the next uranium waste transport will leave the German uranium enrichment plant in Gronau by train heading for Russia via Hengelo-Almelo-Apeldoorn-Amersfoort-Utrecht-Rotterdam. There the 1000 t of depleted uranium will be loaded onto a ship with St. Petersburg as port of destination.
The final destination is the closed city of Novouralsk near Ekaterinburg in the ural mountains where the uranium waste will be stored indefinitely under open sky.
For the last several years the uranium waste transports have become an international issue with protests all the way from Gronau to Ekaterinburg. TV-stations in Germany, Finland, Estonia and Russia have reported, a BBC-radio report is out shortly. In places like Hengelo and Almelo there have been time and again protests and Greenpeace has watched things in Rotterdam closely.
Therefore it will be no surprise if there will be spontaneous protests again along the railway line. According to a recent statement by the German Ministry for the Enviroment it is by no means certain that contracts between Dutch-British-German uranium enricher Urenco and Russia will not be renewed next year. Therefore strong international protests are more important than ever to stop this shameful and dangerous waste disposal once and for all.

The uranium waste train left Gronau at 7 pm as scheduled. Protests occured so far in Gronau, Steinfurt, Altenberge, Muenster and Emsdetten. In Almelo a vigil is expected later this evening.
There was plenty of police along the railway line and they were in various places pretty nervous.
