ILLUMINATING the streets with the flame of reason, thousands of young Cubans marched from the University of Havana Stairway to the Martí Forge, to welcome January 28 and honor Cuban national hero José Martí on the 156th anniversary of his birth. The March of the Torches was a reenactment of the one organized in 1953 by the Centenary Generation, which was headed by Fidel, and was also in tribute to the one of exactly 50 years ago, the first after the triumph of the Revolution. Vice President José Ramón Machado Ventura and other members of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba headed the patriotic mass demonstration together with leaders of Cuban youth and student organizations. Julio Martínez, first secretary of the Union of Young Communists, told the AIN that the march was clear evidence of the firmness and loyalty of the new generations, who will not fail and will continue along the revolutionary path, equipped with the ideas of Martí, the teachings of Fidel and Raúl and the guide of the Party.
