The Libyan Revolution and the Arab Spring

'Leftists should be particularly hesitant to embrace arguments that the current conflict is a reflection of Libya’s tribal divisions. The view that Arabs are more tribal than national is, after all, a key component of Orientalist mythology. Libyan writer Alaa al-Ameri argues that Libyans’ sense of nationality has been stronger than tribal or regional loyalty for most of the 20th and 21st centuries. She explains how Qaddafi used his patronage system as a method of fomenting tribal divisions. Now, however, Libyans are rising up, not against rival tribes but against the regime. Western leftists should take her plea seriously. “By labeling us as ‘tribal’ you effectively dismiss the notion that our uprising has anything to do with freedom, democracy or human dignity. Do you place narrow regional loyalties above these values? I'm sure you would reject any such characterisation, and naturally so. Please do us, as Libyans, the courtesy of allowing us the same human characteristics you attribute to yourselves.”'

"In this context, however, it is worth noting one alternative that may not have been able to relieve the pressure on Benghazi but would have been politically useful. Had Cuba’s Fidel Castro or Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez expressed direct support for the Libyan revolution they could have impacted the political balance of forces within the rebel camp and within the middle east. Cuba and Venezuela, instead of France, could have been the first countries to recognize the TNC. Instead of Qatar, they could have been the first to open trade deals. They probably could have offered arms and trainers, even if they couldn’t provide a no fly zone.
Instead they offered equivocal statements. They opposed western intervention, supported vague conceptions of Libyan self-determination, and never once supported the Libyan revolution. Castro recounted Qaddafi’s allegedly progressive history and how he had been repeatedly victimized by imperialism. Chavez doubted the reports of Qaddafi’s brutality.[xxi] In short the two most prominent figures who claim to be revolutionaries and socialists made it clear to the Libyan revolutionaries, and to revolutionaries throughout the Arab world, that they were not on their side. By refusing to support the Libyan revolution Castro and Chavez have done yet further damage to the image of socialism in the Arab world. This is especially destructive because Qaddafi’s repeated use of socialist rhetoric has already associated socialism with tyranny and corruption. Their verbal intervention has made the work of socialists that much harder."

ps Bovengaande zou de suggestie kunnen wekken dat wat volgt een gesprek met de genoemde Alaa al-Ameri zou zijn. Dit is niet het geval, in het artikel van Solidarity wordt slechts verwezen naar een artikel door haar. De passage leek me in de gauwigheid geschikt als introductie.

Overigens richtten nog ruim vóór Resolutie 1973, al op 24 februari, deze schrijvers zich tot radicalen in Latijns Amerika: 'From Latin America to the Arab World – What’s going on in Libya?', by Santiago Alba Rico & Alma Allende, http://www.solidarity-us.org/current/node/3215 .
Het is een vertaling uit het Spaans, 'Del mundo árabe a América Latina', http://www.rebelion.org/noticia.php?id=123027 . Op dit laatste Rebelión lijkt wel meer belangwekkends te worden geschreven; vertalers die zich geroepen voelen, wat let je.

Ik heb me gezet aan een vertaling van dit interview, maar het Duits wijkt te zeer af van het origineel, waarbij ik stuk liep op het Italiaans, dat ik amper machtig ben. Dus nogmaals, vertalers die zich geroepen voelen... Ook Gabriele's Italiaanse blog lijkt zeer de moeite.)

Overigens en met dank aan Streamtime http://streamtime.org/ , die wezen al een tijdje geleden op dit plaatselijke live-gebeuren, 'Alive in Libya', http://alive.in/libya/ . Ik kan er zo weinig over zeggen, dus gegeven 'as is'.
E.e.a. speelt zich kennelijk af onder de paraplu van Small World News http://smallworldnews.tv/ ; merk daar ook op hun vergelijkbare portals voor (op z'n minst) Egypte, Irak, Bahrein, Afghanistan, Gaza, Mexico en Iran. Die echter in nogal wisselende staat van actualiteit lijken te verkeren.
Zo ook natuurlijk Libya Alhurra http://www.livestream.com/libya17feb , het is me daar momenteel alweer niet duidelijk in hoe verre dit momenteel nog leeft. De initiator is redelijk veel in het Nederlandse nieuws geweest, hij liet helaas het leven tijdens zijn verslaggeving vanuit Benghazi, nog vlak voor de geallieerde bombardementen. Van zijn dood heb ik hier in de mainstream-pers niet veel gezien, maar ik kan het best hebben gemist.
Verder wijst Streamtime nog op 'Bahrain protesters launch TV channel: https://www.lulu-tv.com/ '; aangezien dit hoofdzakelijk in het Arabisch is, kan ik er al helemaal niets over zeggen.
