Some time ago we squatted Nieuwe Leliestraat 70. We stayed there silently until 23.09.2023 after which we revealed our new home to the neighborhood. The building is owned by the social housing company Ymere, which has left it to rot unused for more than six years. It was previously squatted in 2020, but was quickly evicted, after which Ymere left it unoccupied again. We believe it is a disgrace to leave such a beautiful big house empty in the midst of a housing crisis, so we moved in.

Our new neighbors told us that the building next door used to also be social housing owned by Ymere until they renovated it and sold it privately. We suspect that they would have liked to do the same with our new home. This is something that happens often; there are 53,000 fewer social houses in Amsterdam now than there were in 2003. Meanwhile the demand for affordable housing grows every year.
Social housing companies like Ymere purposefully neglect some of their buildings, only to renovate and sell them for huge sums of money. The companies say they use the money to build new social housing, but in reality a significant amount of the money goes towards absurdly high salaries for management and the construction of market rental units that are unaffordable for most working class people. We squatted this building to protest the sale of social housing, to resist the yuppification of the Jordaan and because we needed a place to live in this expensive city. We are a group of friends who share the conviction that housing should be free and that it is up to us to to take back what is ours from the landlords and the bosses. Our goal for the building is to use the downstairs as a social space for political and neighborhood activities and to use the top floors as a home for ourselves and our friends who don't have access to stable housing. Enige tijd geleden hebben we Nieuwe Leliestraat 70 gekraakt. We verbleven er stilletjes tot 23.09.2023 waarna we ons nieuwe onderkomen aan de buurt onthulden. Het gebouw is eigendom van de sociale woningbouw vereniging Ymere, die het meer dan zes jaar leeg heeft laten weg rotten. Het werd eerder gekraakt in 2020,de krakers werden toen naar een paar dagen al ontruimd. Waarna Ymere het weer leeg liet staan. Wij vinden het een schande dat zo'n mooi groot huis midden in een wooncrisis onbewoond bleef, dus zijn we er ingetrokken.
Onze nieuwe buren vertelden ons dat het huis ernaast vroeger ook sociale huurwoningen van Ymere waren, totdat ze het renoveerden en particulier verkochten. We vermoeden dat ze hetzelfde hadden willen doen met ons nieuwe huis. Dit is iets wat vaak gebeurt; er zijn nu 53.000 sociale huurwoningen minder in Amsterdam dan in 2003. Ondertussen groeit de vraag naar betaalbare woningen elk jaar.

Sociale woningcorporaties zoals Ymere verwaarlozen doelbewust sommige huizen, om ze vervolgens op te knappen en voor enorme bedragen te verkopen. De corporaties zeggen dat ze het geld gebruiken om nieuwe sociale woningen te bouwen, maar in werkelijkheid gaat een aanzienlijk deel van het geld naar absurd hoge salarissen voor het management en de bouw van markt huurwoningen die onbetaalbaar zijn voor de meeste mensen uit de werkende klasse. We hebben dit gebouw gekraakt uit protest tegen de verkoop van sociale huurwoninge en uit verzet tegen de veryupping van de Jordaan. En natuurlijk omdat wij zelf een plek nodig hadden om te wonen in deze dure stad. We zijn een groep vrienden die de overtuiging delen dat huisvesting gratis zou moeten zijn. Het is aan ons allemaal om terug te vechten tegen pandjes bazen en uitbuiting. Ons plan is om de benedenverdieping te gebruiken als een sociale ruimte voor politieke organisatie en buurtactiviteiten en om de bovenste verdiepingen te gebruiken als een thuis voor onszelf en onze vrienden die hiervoor geen toegang hadden tot betaalbare huisvesting.Heel erg bedank voor de solidariteit van iedereen die kwam opdagen, die sindsdien op bezoek is geweest en die ons al is gaan helpen om van dit gebouw een thuis te maken.
