On the coronation day of Queen Beatrix in April 1980, squatters, anarchists and all those who believed in housing rights above monarchy rioted against the coronation. Housing was too expensive and inaccessible, and the state spent millions for the coronation instead of investing it into housing. 40 years later, the housing crisis is worse than it was in the 1980s, Amsterdam recently officially being the most expensive city to rent in Europe.
Instead of celebrating the monarchy that leeches off our taxes and gives us nothing back, on Koningsdag we celebrate Woningsdag.
Koningsdag is not a day to idly dress in orange and celebrate, but a day to reclaim what is rightfully ours, housing.
This is especially relevant this year, with an increase in nationalistic sympathy after the win of an extreme far right government.
27th of april, get active in midst of chaos!
